The Garden Party Throws Us For A Loop

Part two of our hectic day yesterday. Our garden party, momma Dahlia and kittens Juniper, Cosmos, Poppy and Daffodil got their check ups and vaccines. When we get a family, we pool their blood for the FIV/FELV test because it’s rare that we see them pop up positive with kitties this old and healthy, and the tests are expensive, so it’s a good way to make our nonprofit money go farther. However, it’s a gamble, because if that pooled test comes up positive, we have to retest them all! That’s what happened with this family. We saw a faint but clearly present positive for FELV (feline leukemia), so we had to redraw blood and retest them all. Good news is Dahlia, Poppy, Juniper and Cosmos are all negative. Sad news is that Daffy is positive. So what does this mean? Poor Daffy has to stay with me and undergo more of these tests until we hopefully see her clear it. Everyone else can find homes, but it’s best if their new kitty families are vaccinated for FELV— they aren’t likely contagious, but better safe than sorry. It’s likely that Daffy’s momma and siblings just fought off the virus in its primary viremia stage, and Daffy is working towards that.
